The global fast-food chain has removed a holiday advert made using Artificial Intelligence after facing widespread criticism on social media.

The brief spot was developed via AI-generated video and was initially uploaded publicly for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.

Viewer Response and Decision to Pull

Shortly after its release, commenters criticized the employment of AI in the commercial. Many described it as "disturbing" and "awkwardly stitched together".

"This incident serves as an key lesson as we explore the proper application of Artificial Intelligence," said a statement from the company.

The advert was produced for the brand by Netherlands-based company TBWA\Neboko and US production company The Sweetshop. It depicted various things that might go awry during the Christmas break, using the slogan "the worst time of the year".

A Growing Trend of AI in Advertising

Commercials that incorporate generative AI have emerged as a increasing trend among large companies, notably for the holiday season.

  • Coca-Cola has recently released back-to-back AI-created holiday commercials.
  • Inherent Limitations: As clips produced with generative AI are prone to degrade the more extended they are, the majority of AI video outputs tend to be roughly short in length.
  • Industry Concerns: The ad also provoked fears about automation in the advertising industry, with some critics noting it could reduce opportunities for camera crews.

Defense from the Creators

After the commercial being pulled, The Sweetshop's CEO, Melanie Bridge, stood by the project.

Bridge claimed, the production process required "seven weeks" and involved producing "numerous versions" which were then crafted in post-production "in the same way we would on any high-craft production".

"This wasn't an experiment," she said. "The result was a finished piece."

Divisive Public Reception

While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was predominantly panned, the sentiment for other AI-assisted campaigns has been varied.

For instance, a recent AI-created Christmas spot from Coca-Cola reportedly received a 61% "positive sentiment rating" from online commenters.

However, various brands have likewise received backlash for employing the technique in marketing. Luxury fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that critics called "low-effort" and "disturbing".

The incident illustrates the ongoing discussion within the advertising and creative sectors about the balance between technological innovation and human craftsmanship.
